BONES OF JADE, FLESH LIKE ICE

Viking Penguin Random House, Fall 2026

A woman, living during the Song dynasty, is determined to write her own fate, despite being cursed by a jing prophesy, married off to a pig farmer and an emperor, then murdered and reincarnated. Like Circe and The Snow Child, BONES OF JADE, FLESH LIKE ICE, is a dark fairytale that reimagines centuries-old mythology to examine what it means to be a woman with power.

Eleventh century Taiwan. In a small village, far from the political conflicts of the royal dynasty, Yu’er and her sisters are sold off to be married, thanks to a fox jing’s prophesy. She is abandoned by her father in the wretched house of poor pig farmers, where she finds solace in kind Xiaozhu, still a child himself.

Yu’er and Xiaozhu grow up together and create a semblance of a home, but outside forces threaten to tear them apart. Determined to not lose a second family, Yu’er strikes a deal with a hen jing, she’ll marry the Great Lord Zhong and have all the power and riches she desires to keep herself and her loved ones safe, but she has to leave Xiaozhu and their home together forever.

Yu’er’s choice to force destiny, sets off a dark saga that will lead her to the heart of the royal court, and will bring her more power than she ever dreamed of, but may kill her humanity along the way.

Basically, she's an old lady.

Gracie enjoys reading in various genres, but has an affinity for speculative fiction with a literary bent. Almost all of her favorite books have made her ugly cry at some point.
